Homeopathy

What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy is one of the most widely used forms of medicine in the world today. It was discovered over 200 years ago by a German doctor and chemist called Samuel Hahnemann.

Homeopathy seeks to treat the cause of illness, by strengthening each individual (physically, mentally and emotionally) and enabling the body to heal itself.

It works on a principle known as ‘the law of similars’ or ‘like cures like’. This law states that a substance that can cause a disease can also relieve it.

For example, coffee — or Coffea as it is known in latin—is a stimulant that can cause temporary insomnia. Where the symptoms match, Coffea may be used in minute potentised (ie. Homeopathic) doses to relieve insomnia.

Another example is that chopping onions can cause your nose and eyes to run. The onion — Allium cepa—can be used homeopathically to treat colds and hayfever where the main symptoms include runny eyes and nose.

Is it safe?

Homeopathy is a complete system of medicine that treats people with mental, emotional and physical illness. As there is no risk of toxic side effects or addiction, it is safe for everyone to use including babies, children, women during pregnancy/breast feeding and the elderly. The medicines taste pleasant, making them easy for children to take.

Homeopathy can also be used instead of or alongside medicine from your doctor. If you are taking medication from your doctor, I will assess your progress and adjust your treatment accordingly. Anyone can consult a homeopath for treatment with a particular condition in mind or to boost their immunity and improve overall well being. As your condition improves, you may be able to reduce your conventional medication, thereby avoiding the unwanted effects that sometimes accompany the use of these drugs. Of course, this is a decision you need to make in consultation with your GP.

What is a consultation like?

At your first consultation you will have the opportunity to talk about your complaint or condition in detail. It is helpful for me to know when it started and anything that makes it better or worse. I will also ask you about your health history and your family medical history.

Information about your lifestyle and aspirations, your sleep patterns, food likes and dislikes will all help me to build up my overview of you as a whole person. The first consultation lasts 60 - 90 minutes, enabling me to understand your individual needs and prescribe the best medicine for your particular problem. Follow up appointments last 30 - 45 mins. Prescriptions for acute illnesses such as shock, injury, fever, vomiting or flu are assessed much more quickly.

Homeopathic treatment is a process and my aim is that you should be as involved in that process as you wish to be. Together we will try to find the underlying cause of your symptoms which may be one of many things and could include events such as an illness, a physical trauma such as an accident, or an emotional trauma such as bereavement or divorce.

What can you expect from treatment?

Homeopathy promotes health in its fullest sense. People who have had homeopathic treatment report that they are generally better able to resist infection, feel well, have greater vitality and a more positive outlook on life.

The pace with which you will feel relief will depend on the condition treated. In acute ailments, results can be very quick. In more chronic conditions, your recovery rate will depend on the nature of the illness and your individual vitality.

Who is homeopathy for?

Homeopathy is a safe, effective medicine for people with almost any condition you might see a doctor for. I commonly see people wanting help with the following:

Acute and chronic conditions
Anxiety & stress related conditions
Asthma, hayfever & other respiratory disorders
Allergies
ME
IBS, candida imbalance & other digestive problems
Hormonal imbalance – PMS, menopausal symptoms, PCOS, dysmenorrhoea, irregular periods, fertility, problems at puberty
Insomnia
Bereavement
Shock & trauma
Skin problems
Fears & phobias, for example air travel, dentists, public speaking
Preparation for surgery & post-operative support
Travel – common ailments when travelling abroad
Babies & children – teething, colic, childhood illness, behaviour issues,
Pregnancy – morning sickness, SPD, post natal depression

Remember!! Homeopathy is:

Safe
Non-addictive
Non-toxic
And it helps to promote the body’s natural ability to heal by addressing the cause of disease, not merely the symptoms.
