Lymphatic Drainage
Lymphoedema Is a visible swellling of a body part, often an extremity, because of an accumulation of fluid in the tissue. Two main types are seen in the UK which are Primary and Secondary. Primary oten has no obvious cause, sometimes being present at birth.
The lower limb is usuallly where the condition is seen. Onset may be slow and gradual during which time the limbs become pillar shaped. Secondary arises after surgery, infection, trauma and radiotherapy.
Following surgery for breast cancer approximately 30% of patients develop swollen limbs. The condition is not curable but, with treatment, can be improved and managed.
